Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.75 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Whole milk or buttermilk
  • Optional milk or melted butter

Instructions

  • Freeze the butter for at least 20 minutes to create a flaky texture.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  • Grate the frozen butter and mix it into the dry ingredients with a fork.
  • Pour the milk or buttermilk into the mixture and stir until a dough forms.

Folding and Cutting

  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat into a 1½-inch thick rectangle, then fold in half.
  • Repeat the folding process 4 to 6 times to create layers.
  • Press the dough to a 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits without twisting.

Baking

  • Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and optionally brush the tops with milk or melted butter.
  • Bake for 13 to 16 minutes until lightly golden brown.

Notes

  • Chill your tools for flakier biscuits, ensure baking powder is fresh, and do not overmix the dough.
